13 Photographs That Changed The World

This page 13 Photographs That Changed the World has been getting a lot of linkage on the Internet lately. It looks like they took a bunch of old LIFE magazine photos that helped change the world's perception of historical events.

You'll certainly have seen at least a few of these photos before... the mother in the midst of the
Great Depression, the Sailor and the nurse kissing in Times Square at the end of WWII, Einstien with his tongue hanging out, the street execution of a man during the Vietnam War.

All of these photos are remarkable and capture the moment in time without having to explain what's going on using words. These images are iconic and have probably been broadcast millions of times around the world.

I'm a big fan of one photo in particular - The photo of Dali (#10) with it's cats and water flying through the air and Dali suspended in midair. It always brings a smile to my face every time I see it. I did a little research on the photographer Philippe Halsman and it turns out he had ALL of his subjects jump for at least a few frames... famous people too like Marilyn Manroe and Richard Nixon. Check out some of his work here:

Mostly non jumping photos :)

The Dali image brings to mind one of my other favorite images of all time - it's another very clever image created by manipulating time and shutter speed - Picasso painting a Minataur with his light pen (taken by Gjon Mili).

I'm just linking to all of these sites to avoid any copyright snafus... I've been using my own photos for all of the articles on this blog so far. I hope you enjoy and gain some inspiraion from these truly great photos.

I know I was especially inspired by the Dali and Picasso photos above to experiment with some of my own photos:
